1. Determine what texture and length of hair you want to use
This step is super important. There are so many different types of extensions that it’s good to know exactly how much hair your client will need before purchasing. Also, knowing the type of extension (i.e., clip ins) beforehand helps with planning as well!
There are three main types: wefted, fusion or prebonded/tipped, and strand by strand. Wefts tend to be the most popular because they can create a full head quickly and easily and there is no damage done during application process like in fusion or tape in extensions . When deciding on which one I recommend going for wefts if possible! For those who don’t know these products, a weft is a strip of hair that has been sewn together to form an extremely long piece. The benefit to this method over others is because the extensions are woven in with your client’s natural hair they blend seamlessly and create less damage during application!
Fusion or prebonded/tipped products involve heating up keratin tipped pieces using either heat from a blow dryer or iron then gluing them into place on top of your clients existing hairs. For example someone with 22 inches around their head would want 110-120 pieces for a whole head while if they wanted 60 pieces it would go down the back only making them about 18 inches long.
